1960 – Poucher’s grocery store in Islamorada was purposefully destroyed by fire when, after days without power from Hurricane Donna, it was determined the rotting meats and vegetables inside were becoming a health hazard.

1919 – A general strike was called by 3,000 Key West cigarmakers and tobacco workers. The laborers were demanding wage increases comparable to those paid in Tampa.

1957 – Someone stole $7,311.89 from the Food Fair supermarket in Key West. The money was taken from the store’s safe, which was not broken into and had instead been opened by a combination known only to a few. “We have a very limited number of suspects,” said Key West Police.

1975 – The Florida State Unemployment Compensation Bureau in Key West moved from 419 to 421 Caroline Street. Both addresses were within the same building.

1949 – Fausto’s Food Palace, a new, “ultra-modern” store, opened at 522 Fleming Street.

2010 – The Friends of Higgs Beach, an ad hoc citizens’ group, was working with Monroe County to improve the Key West beachfront park.

1975 – A representative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development met the mayor of Key West and toured Duval Street with him.

1964 – The Hemingway House opened as a museum dedicated to telling of the late author’s life in Key West.

1925 – A group of Key Westers traveled by boat to Munson Island to give a surprise party for Mr. and Mrs. Newton Munson.

1919 – The city council of Havana voted to donate a stage curtain for the new San Carlos Institute building at Key West.
