1939 – A Works Progress Administration sewer line project employing 442 Key West men had, to date, laid 20 miles of sewer pipe in the city.

1947 – President Harry Truman’s arrival in Key West was a windfall for many residents.

1925 – A daily silent period for the naval radio station at Key West was authorized, to end interference with local radio stations.

1955 – Mackerel and tarpon were running in Key West Harbor and dozens of fishermen were trying their luck from the Clyde-Mallory Dock.

1930 – County Commissioners sold the Monroe County highway ferry system that spanned the road’s water gaps to the county engineer.

1898 - A Naval Court of Inquiry was organized to investigate the sinking of the USS Maine, and it would meet in the Key West Custom House.

1926 – A gala dance contest was held at the La Concha Hotel in Key West.

1999 – Key West City Clerk Josephine Parker died unexpectedly after collapsing at the dais just before the start of a commission meeting.

1935 – The Long Key Fishing Camp was hosting its largest group of anglers in five years.

1954 – After completing structural surveys, the Florida Road Department greenlighted 2,000 feet of fishing catwalks on bridges.

1907 – The City of Key West was striving to make Fleming Street on either side of Duval the “Broadway” of the city.

2003 – The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory opened for business at 1316 Duval Street.

1935 – The cabanas at Rest Beach were fully booked by winter visitors for the season.

1912 – “Opening the Over Sea Railway to Key West” was the cover story of Collier’s National Weekly Magazine.

In 1927, a car dealer and a race car driver made the first trip from the mainland to Key West by automobile - partly on train tracks.
