1898 – The Red Cross Society’s ship State of Texas, with nurses and medicine, arrived at Key West from New York.
1930 – The sponge auction at Key West was slow, with just shy of $1,000 in sales. Wool sponge accounted for three-quarters of the proceeds, with yellow and grass sponge lots coming in far behind.
1956 – The Navy announced it wanted to take possession of Monday Key, a ¼ acre island situated off the northwestern part of Boca Chica Key, northward of U.S. 1. Anyone with claims to the small key had 30 days to make their case known.
1968 – National Air Lines made the first jet landing at Key West International Airport using a Boeing 727. The county had extended the runway and removed obstructions to make the airport usable for jets.
1982 – The last span of the new Seven Mile Bridge was put into place.
1992 – Key West Police made a gruesome discovery at a home on Southard Street when they found a man who had been dead for two months. His roommate was unaware he was dead.
