Today in Keys History – January 3, 2024

1908 – The mail boat from Miami to Key West ran aground, and delivery was delayed for 36 hours.

1923 – It was reported that a total of 1,287 ships arrived and docked in Key West Harbor in 1922; 75 were of foreign registry.

1929 – Ross G. Sawyer assumed the office of Monroe Circuit Court Clerk. He was appointed by Governor John W. Martin to replace former clerk Dave Z. Filer, who had been removed from office for embezzling public funds.

1949 – The Key West City Commission granted a lease to the Key West Charter Boatmen’s Association for a portion of Garrison Bight facing North Roosevelt Boulevard.

1953 – Fishermen reported a 10-mile-wide band of “red tide” between the Marquesas Keys and Dry Tortugas. It was hoped that strong winds would disperse the dreaded blight.

2011 – Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn took time from their holiday vacation in Marathon to visit with Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Keys and offer congratulations for its Bayside Landing development on Big Coppitt Key.
