1828 – The brig George, sailing from Maine to New Orleans, after having run aground at the Dry Tortugas, was helped off by three fishing vessels. It then sailed to Key West to resolve any salvage claim. The “Court of Arbitrators” there awarded the fishermen $2,800 for their three hours of assistance.

1872 – The residence of the Spanish Consul at Key West was being guarded at night by U.S troops to protect against demonstration or damage by Cuban independence activists.

1907 – Two 12-year-old Key Westers, Ralph DuBreuil and Milton Eddings, boarded the S.S. Olivette using false identities, and, unbeknownst to their parents, steamed to Tampa. Telegrams were sent to Tampa, and the boys were found and returned home.

1954 – T.W. Stalnaker was building a concrete-block house on Big Pine Key under the supervision of Clarence Key. Blasting had been going on for two days as trees were being cleared from the lot.

1963 – David Carey, a 1955 graduate of Key West Douglass High School and an Army veteran, signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Carey was a catcher-outfielder.

1967 – Wisteria Island (aka Christmas Tree Island) was sold for $155,000 by Wisteria Island, Inc., Aldo Amaryk, president. The buyer was the F.E.B. Corporation of 1526 Washington Street, the home address of Ben Bernstein, a major developer of Stock Island.

2010 – The Key West City Commission debated the location for a new City Hall, with the current Angela Street site, Horace O’Bryant Middle School, and Glynn Archer Elementary School being the contenders.
