1889 – The Florida Legislature granted a new charter to the city of Key West that placed the entire island within city limits.
1926 – The subscription price of the Key West Citizen delivered by carrier in the in the city of Key West was raised from 15 cents to 20 cents a week.
1950 – The U.S. Census of 1950 shows the population of Monroe County was 29,957, of whom 26,433 lived in Key West.
1958 – Boog Powell was the leading hitter for the Key West High School varsity baseball team. Across the ’58 season, Powell had 27 hits in 64 at bats for a .415 average, along with 21 RBIs.
2006 – A planning document called the Key Largo Livable CommuniKeys Program laid out a vision for “casual village style” development on the largest island of the Keys. It outlined the growth of three commercial zones: “Downtown” (MM 99-100), Tradewinds Plaza (MM101.4), and the area around MM 102.
2011 – The developer of a dinosaur theme park was moving forward with a proposal to install 100-150 life-size fiberglass dinosaur replicas in Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park. Despite promises of increased tourism and a boost to the economy, area residents generally opposed the plan.
