1845 – Benjamin Sawyer was re-elected mayor of Key West and Joseph Y. Porter, John Boyle, Michael Shanahan, and Samuel O. Tift were chosen for the city council.
1908 – The governor of Cuba, Charles E. Magoon, arrived in Key West on the steamer Miami enroute to Washington, DC.
1955 – Key Wester Joe Fernandez was named Monarch of the Cayo Hueso Grotto organization. The local Grotto fellowship had been chartered by the Supreme Council of the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm in 1952, with a humanitarian mission of aiding “spastic and Cerebral Palsy children.”
1959 – Dr. Delio Cobo was re-elected mayor of Key West, and Gerald Abreu and Kenneth A. Archer were elected to the city commission.
1960 – Key West City commissioners heard a proposal from New York developers to build a championship 18-hole golf course with a new clubhouse and a smokeless odorless incinerator to replace the city dump. The work would be in exchange for over 100 acres surrounding the course, as well as 6,000 feet of highway frontage.
1969 – After 123 years of service, the Key West Lighthouse was turned off by Mrs. Jennie DeBoer. Mrs. DeBoer’s mother had been a keeper of the light.
1985 – The Filipino-American Association of Key West held its 20th anniversary celebration at the Navy BOQ.
1994 – An audit of the Monroe County Fine Arts Council revealed the misuse of thousands of dollars, with the executive director using funds to pay personal expenses.
