Floridians are getting ready for storm season and there's lots of good advice about getting ready ahead of time - we recommend the preparedness guide from Monroe County Emergency Management. And we also recommend getting a Monroe County Public Library card. Here's why:
You can stock up on books - including eBooks and eAudiobooks, as well as digital magazines - to keep you and your family informed, occupied, and entertained whether you're waiting it out at home or evacuating to the mainland.
If you have power and wifi, you can watch film and television with our Kanopy app on the device of your choice. We've recently added two new collections with unlimited plays - British Film & Television and Kanopy Favorites. You also get unlimited plays on the curated content on Kanopy Kids.
Find storm preparation information at all of our branches, as well as information about services you may need after a storm. And you get free access to Law Depot, which offers business and legal forms that may come in handy.
SAVE MONEY. If you've been through a storm, you know they can be costly - even without damages. Lost wages, materials to board up, gas and hotels on the road - it all adds up. Why pay for subscriptions to audiobooks, ebooks or streaming services when you can get those at no cost from your Library?
If a storm is approaching and you don't have time to go to a library branch? You can sign up online and start using our 24/7 resources. These cards are good for 90 days, so you will have to come to one of our branches and show proof of local residency before it expires. We recommend you come to one of the branches now, before the storm is on our radar, to get the full two-year card.
Here is where you can find reliable information as storms approach:
