1845 – Joseph C. Whalton was named Postmaster of Key West.
1909 – A.M. Goehring accepted the position as circulation manager for the Key West Morning Journal. The Journal has been growing steadily since it began publication.
1932 – Horace O’Bryant was appointed principal of the Monroe County senior and junior high school.
1945 – The population of Monroe County was listed as 19,018 in the Florida State Census.
1956 – Throngs of shoppers crowded downtown Key West to take advantage of the deals offered by 28 merchants in the annual “Fiesta Days” sale. Participating store owners rented the city parking lot so customers could park for free.
1963 – The first city commission of the newly incorporated City of Stock Island was sworn into office at the Baptist Church on Stock Island.
1966 – The developers of the Sears Town shopping center were angered after Key West city commissioners passed a signage variance to allow the placement of a sign along North Roosevelt Boulevard that promoted the downtown area.
1995 – Fire destroyed the Copa nightclub and adjoining buildings in the 600 block of Duval Street. It was the worst fire in Key West in 72 years.
