1898 – Key West went wild over news that the fleet had departed and war with Spain had begun. The Cuban and American flags were on every house and the San Carlos was covered in red, white and blue bunting.


1926 – Coleman Duncan, editor and publisher of the fledgling newspapers the Key West Morning Call and the Evening Telegram, was finding the island market was poor for multiple newspapers. The Morning Call had lasted nine months; the Evening Telegram nine days.


1953 – The crew filming the movie “Beneath the 12 Mile Reef” arrived and took over the Casa Marina Hotel. The movie starred Terry Moore, Robert Wagner, Peter Graves, and J. Carroll Nash, who arrived with the rest of the crew. Seventy-five locals were used as extras in the film.


1972 – The old Monroe General Hospital was being converted to offices for use by a growing Monroe County government.


1976 – The Florida Keys 4-H Club held a horse show at Peary Court in Key West. The event was open to the public.


2006 – A ceremony honoring Spanish-American War “Rough Rider” Frank B. Booth was held in the Key West Cemetery. Pvt. Booth died at Key West in 1898 from injuries he suffered in battle in Cuba, and he was buried in an unmarked grave. Researchers had recently identified the site, and a marker was placed on his grave.


2011 – City of Key West code officers issued a notice of violation to the Monroe County School District for the new Horace O’Bryant School. The 56-foot-tall building, which was under construction, violated the city’s 25-foot height cap by more than 30 feet.
