1957 – A Pan American Airways flag that flew over the airline’s first facility at Key West was presented to the Monroe County Commission by James A. Robbins of Clearwater, who had kept the banner for almost 30 years. The commissioners voted to ask the Pan American company to display it at their new offices.

1958 – Over 300 members of the Outdoor Writers Association of America were holding their annual convention at Key Colony Beach. The group participated in laying the cornerstone of the new Key Colony Beach Convention Center. 

1980 – A one-day record of 5,117 refugees arrived at Key West during the boatlift from Mariel, Cuba.

1955 – Monroe County commissioners deeded 1/2-acre of land near Hilton Haven to the Key West Lions Club. The County retained all mineral rights for the property, though.

2000 – The Florida Department of Community Affairs awarded Key West an additional 54 units of affordable housing under the Rate of Growth Ordinance (ROGO) because the city had preserved the Berg property, an unaltered beachfront area and home to many species of indigenous Keys plants and animals.

1959 – Some 25 members of the Marathon-based Tortugas Shrimpers Association met with elected officials in Tallahassee to urge the passage of a bill that would reopen areas of the Tortugas shrimp beds that had been closed for conservation.

1975 – Robert “Speedy” Neal pitched a perfect game in a Little Major League contest at Key West’s Peter Dopp Field.

1935 – The Federal Emergency Relief Administration’s strategy of reshaping Key West into a tourist destination was working.

1975 - The new East and West Wings of the Monroe County Public Library at 700 Fleming Street in Key West were dedicated.

1985 – Outraged Key Westers fumed at city commissioners, who were considering plans for a sewage treatment plant near Fort Taylor.

1898 - A Naval Court of Inquiry was organized to investigate the sinking of the USS Maine, and it would meet in the Key West Custom House.

Many people were traveling by train from Miami to Knights Key “solely for the novelty of the ride over the sea by rail.”

1935 – The Key West Aquarium was opened with a dedication ceremony attended by more than 500 celebrants.

1935 – The Long Key Fishing Camp was hosting its largest group of anglers in five years.

1924 – The first batch of concrete for the walls of the San Carlos Opera House was poured.

1899 – The Key West Electric Street Railway company opened with a streetcar that ran up and down Duval and to La Brisa.

1960 – Students at Key West High School were dismissed for the day after a phone caller warned a bomb was set go off there at 2 p.m.

1907 – The City of Key West was striving to make Fleming Street on either side of Duval the “Broadway” of the city.

1911 – Curtiss Aircraft test pilot J.A.W. McCurdy attempted to fly from Key West to Havana but crashed just short of the goal.

2003 – The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory opened for business at 1316 Duval Street.
