1976 – Key Westers Thurlow and Auwina Weed were bringing national attention to the island art of conch shell horn blowing. The duo had just returned from performing at “Ocean Festival ‘76” in New York, and Thurlow had recently appeared on the popular television program “To Tell the Truth.”

1991 – Monroe County staff and nearly 100 volunteers collected more than 100 tons of garbage during the “Great Stock Island Clean-up.” The island had long been plagued by illegal dumping.

1956 – Cuban Treasurer General Plutarco Villalobo Marquez presented a marble bust of José Martí to the Key West Art & Historical Society. Mayor C.B. Harvey thanked the Cuban government in both English and Spanish for the gesture of friendship.

1926 – Monroe County Sheriff Roland Curry arrested the promoter of a Stock Island cockfighting arena while a fight was underway. Fala Rodriguez was charged with cruelty to animals and placed under $100 bond.

1955 – A mysterious, early morning fire destroyed the living quarters of Key Largo’s famed Caribbean Club, killing Emma Jo Selby of Miami.

2010 – After multiple chicken poisonings in Key West and Stock Island over previous days, Lower Keys wildlife organizations were worried about not only the brazenly illegal acts, but also the effects that poisoned feed and tainted carcasses would have on other animals.
