1845 – Construction began on Fort Taylor off the western end of Key West.

1924 – Melvin E. Russell, who had been elected Superintendent of Monroe County schools the previous week, was busy denying rumors he planned to fire a teacher who had worked on the campaign of his opponent.

1936 – Judge H.H. Taylor fishing with attorney William V. Albury caught a barracuda that measured seven and half feet and weighed 80 pounds.

1959 – The Monroe County Library Association presented the Monroe County Commission with the title to the land and the new library building at 700 Fleming Street. The land had been donated by Karl Thompson and the Association raised the money to build the library.

1994 – As the steel framework of a new-elevated building at the corner of Duval and Front Streets was assembled, citizens and city officials began to worry it was too big and out of character for the historic location. The Planning and Building Departments and HARC were asked to prepare a report on the project.

2004 – Monroe County Commissioners selected David Bullock of Sarasota to succeed Jim Roberts as County Administrator, pending successful contract negotiations.
