1847 – The ship Solon, sailing from New York to Mobile, struck a shoal near Sand Key, and three Key West wrecking vessels got it off without injury. The Solon was then taken to Key West. The court awarded the wreckers $12,000 for their salvage efforts.


1951 – Pauline Hemingway died after a brief illness while visiting California. She had been a resident of Key West since 1927 when she came to the island with her then-husband, writer Ernest Hemingway.


1956 – The Monroe County Health Department inspected all the 42 trailer parks in the Keys and found nearly all were following sanitary code. Those not in compliance had only minor violations that were being remedied. At least five new parks were also under construction.  


1993 – Naval Aircraft Squadron VAQ-33 was decommissioned at the Naval Air Station Key West. VAQ-33 had been the largest squadron in Key West.


1994 – Willie Ward, longtime civil right and community leader, died at the age of 70.
