1923 – Monroe County Sheriff Roland Curry left to retrieve a prisoner from Homestead. The man had been arrested for killing another person in a dispute at Cape Sable on mainland Monroe.
1935 – While restoring the Key West Art Center located in the Caroline Lowe house at 303 Duval Street, carpenters discovered a hollowed-out rail on the widow’s walk. During the Civil War, Lowe often flew a Confederate flag from the walk, but whenever Union forces tried to seize the banner, they could never find it. It was thought this hollow was the hiding place.
1965 – Over the weekend, burglars cut through the roof of the First National Bank, entered the vault, and opened 90 of the 1,000 safety deposit boxes. Since the boxes were private the amount stolen was never known and some arrests were made later but no one was ever indicted.
1975 – The Key West Woman’s Club was awarded a grant from the Florida Bicentennial Committee to conduct its proposed series of recorded interviews with older Keys residents titled “Key West As It Was.”
1985 – A four-day shoot in Key West for the film “Running Scared” wrapped. The movie, starring actors Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, tells of the adventures of two Chicago policemen as they hope to retire to the island.
1993 – Dennis Wardlow was re-elected Mayor of Key West and Emery Major, Jimmy Weekley and Sally Lewis were elected to the City Commission.
2015 – Because of a decline in the numbers of barracuda in Florida Keys waters, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission instituted a daily two-fish per person limit for both commercial and recreational fishermen, and a six-fish total per vessel.
