1905 – Sheriff Frank Knight took Simon Reyes to the state prison. Reyes had been found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend and was sentenced to hang but the Governor commuted his sentence to life.
1926 – Governor John W. Martin announced that Chief of Police Cleveland Niles was appointed sheriff of Monroe County to fill the unexpired term of the late Sheriff Roland Curry. Mayor Leslie Curry appointed Ivan Elwood to replace Chief Niles.
1947 – The U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board authorized National Airlines to provide air service between Key West and Havana.
1955 – The Florida Senate passed a reapportionment bill that made Monroe County a stand-alone state district represented in Tallahassee by a senator and two representatives.
1967 – The 6th Battalion (HAWK) 65th Artillery dedicated its four batteries to four Key West Army men killed in Vietnam and re-named the batteries after the four men: Peter Knight, Richard E. Recupero, Florentino Roque, and Eckwood Solomon.
1975 – Over the previous month, Key Westers had earned $2,325.60 from the Reynolds mobile aluminum recycling unit. Islanders had turned in 15,564 pounds of aluminum during that time, the equivalent of 356,592 beverage cans.
