1924 – Key West Captain of Night Police Ivan Elwood and City Jailer Lemuel Baker were each fined $10 for fighting in the street. The officers had argued and gotten into a public fistfight over election results.

1958 – The Monroe County School Board appointed Alfredo Sands principal of Douglass High School.

1960 – The Old Island Restoration Foundation was formed to restore and maintain the traditional atmosphere and architecture peculiar to Key West. The officers named to serve to the first election were: Reta Sawyer, chairman; Ruth Holtsberg, first vice chairman; Joan T. Knight, second vice chairman; Mary L. Graham, secretary and J.J. Pinder, treasurer.

1962 – A reception was held at Truman Elementary School to honor Miss Miriam Carey, who was retiring after 43 years of teaching. The beloved Carey had taught multiple generations of Key Westers, and she was named Florida’s “Teacher of the Year” in 1960.

2010 – Volunteers painted a large rainbow flag on the side of Key West’s “Mount Trashmore” landfill to mark the island’s annual PrideFest celebration. The 125-by-60-foot design was spearheaded by local landscaper John Mumford and artist Rick Worth.

2015 – The FBI did not deny that an airplane seen circling above Key West in recent days was theirs. A spokesman said any air surveillance was case-specific and was not designed for mass investigation or to gather bulk data.
