1858 – The Loggerhead Key Lighthouse was first lighted.
1932 – The Key West Citizen, in a front-page editorial, reported to the citizens of Key West that the paper was cutting back because of lost income from the Great Depression.
1953 – Victor Lang, owner of the Southern Cross Hotel, was named acting Key West city manager.
1958 – Congress agreed that the old Navy Hospital and Commissary building at Tropical and United streets in Key West could be turned over to the Monroe County School District for use as its maintenance headquarters.
1963 – Tom O. Watkins was sworn in as the first Public Defender for Monroe County.
1963 – Key West City Commissioner Ismael Garcia, Jr. asked for a survey of city-owned land on Stock Island as part of his proposal for the donation of a site for a new Monroe County Junior College. “Stock Island would provide a wholesome and attractive setting for a junior college,” said Garcia.
1995 – Ground was broken for the new “Park n’ Ride” parking garage at the corner of Caroline and Grinnell streets in Key West. The $3.5 million, three-level garage would have 300 parking spaces, with a shuttle service to transport users to the Duval Street area.
