Islamorada Branch Creative Writing Update

Creative Writing has been a fun exercise for experienced and new writers alike!

Every Monday at 3:30 pm, participants choose from a list of writing prompts. Then they meet the challenge head-on in a writing sprint. Afterwards, they are given the option to share and discuss approaches to the prompt. Sharing isn’t required. For some, this is simply a time to practice writing and creativity in a quiet space.

Of course, some are excited to share the result of each session. It is not a critique group, but rather a meeting of creative minds who bring their own experiences and ways of thinking to the prompt. A large part of the fun is seeing how different or similar we think when creative challenges arise.

Here’s a few of the prompts we did!

  • Imagine what the everyday objects in our lives might look like in a museum and what stories future generations will tell about them.

  • You open the last book on Earth. What is it about?

  • Just as your flight takes off, you discover a shocking note under your seat . . .

  • Write a story, poem, or free verse in Abecedarian format. (Sentence One starts with the letter “A”, Sentence Two with “B”, Sentence Three with “C” and so on.)

These prompts have inspired stories about the mundane and the strange, pleasant pasts and apocalyptic futures, modern worlds and fantastical realms. Every day is a surprise as new prompts bring new stories!

Join us at the Islamorada Branch every Monday at 3:30 pm and let’s get writing
