1906 – El Centro Asturiano established a branch in Key West. The society had one of the finest hospitals in Havana.


1916 – After investigating the matter, Key West’s acting mayor and city council dismissed charges of “unnecessary cruelty in making an arrest” that had been preferred against patrolman Roy Shehee.


1925 – Mr. Cummings was named manager of the new First Title and Abstract Company.


1945 – The Midget Bar, at the corner of Greene and Ann streets in Key West, featured music by the Melody Boys, Gibly and Tuba, and “the beautiful blonde singer” Van. Also on the evening’s bill was an eating exhibition by Jimmie, “the eatingist woman in South Florida.”


1953 – The 11th case of polio in the Florida Keys for the year was reported, as well as the year’s first death when 6-year-old Graydon Menendez died in Miami’s Children’s Variety Hospital.


1968 – Harry L. Sawyer Sr. was named one of the Top 10 Police Officers in the U.S. by the American Police Association.


1985 – A waste management study group recommended to Monroe County commissioners that cans, newspapers, and other non-food refuse be separated at each house or business prior to collection, as these materials could be sold to recycling centers and reduce the burden on county disposal sites.
