1941 – Five hundred local carpenters entered the third day of a strike at the Key West Naval Station as they demanded a 12½ cent increase in their hourly pay. Navy officials said they would not negotiate during a work stoppage and that the men risked losing their jobs.

1937 – A plan was approved to remove WPA highway workers from the Upper Keys and bring them to Key West in case of a hurricane. Coast Guard patrol boats were to be used to move the men to No Name Key where they would then be taken to Key West by automobile.

2001 – It was announced that Walgreen’s had purchased the Ripley’s Believe It or Not “Odditorium” building at 527 Duval Street in Key West. The former Strand Theater would be refashioned into a variety store and pharmacy, while Ripley’s planned to stay on the island and relocate elsewhere on Duval.

1935 – Despite the air temperature being a chilly 52 degrees, visitors from the north enjoyed swimming in the waters off Key West’s Rest Beach.

1975 – Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, Navy personnel, and volunteers were working to remove 6,000 pounds of baled marijuana that washed ashore along Boca Chica and other keys. One bag was labeled “Bogota,” but there was no evidence of a boat that dumped the $2.5 million haul.
