1976 – Key West City Commissioner and vice-mayor William Gamble died after suffering a heart attack at City Hall while preparing for a commission workshop meeting. Gamble was a Navy veteran and founder of William Gamble Jeweler at 600 Duval Street.

1918 – Private Arthur B. Sawyer, U.S. Marine Corps, was killed in action in France. He was the first Key Wester to die in battle in World War I.

1956 – A Navy ZPG-2 blimp malfunctioned shortly after take-off at Boca Chica Naval Air Station and crashed, taking out 1,800 feet of power lines and damaging the road. All crewmen were OK, suffering only bumps and bruises.

1935 – The landing barge for the Miami-Key West Airways seaplanes was moved from the railroad terminus to the yacht basin (the former Naval Station submarine basin), which was better located and better protected. It was hoped the change would foster daily round-trip flights between the two cities.

1958 – The Civil Aeronautics Administration agreed to relinquish any federal claim to the ownership of the Marathon Airport if title was obtained by Monroe County. County commissioners ordered the process to begin.

1925 – The Navy took custody of Clinton Place at the entrance to Naval Station Key West and assumed maintenance of the monument.
