1961 – Stanley G. Gillette, vice-president of the Van Heusen Corporation and a prime mover in the company’s new Key West-themed men’s sportswear fashion campaign, was given the key to the city by Key West Mayor Delio Cobo.

1975 – Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, Navy personnel, and volunteers were working to remove 6,000 pounds of baled marijuana that washed ashore along Boca Chica and other keys. One bag was labeled “Bogota,” but there was no evidence of a boat that dumped the $2.5 million haul.

2008 – Due to the year-long economic down-turn, Florida Keys marinas were struggling to fill slips. Many were on the verge of bankruptcy.

1940 – Key West Judge Arthur Gomez granted Pauline Hemingway a divorce from her author husband Ernest, who did not contest the matter. Pauline was granted custody of their sons Patrick and Gregory and possession of the family home at 907 Whitehead Street.

1975 – Six hundred people were employed in manufacturing in Key West. A partial breakdown showed 23.7% in textile and clothing production; 21% in stone, clay, glass, and concrete products; 15.8% in printing and publishing; 8.3% in making durable goods; 3.5% in chemicals; and 3.2% in non-durable goods.

1949 – Fausto’s Food Palace, a new, “ultra-modern” store, opened at 522 Fleming Street.

1995 – The statue of Henry “Booty” Singleton at the foot of Margaret Street was dedicated.
