Homeschool Learning Activities at the Marathon Library Branch

Many of the homeschool families in the Florida Keys call the Marathon Library their classroom on Thursday mornings. We not only offer activities and enrichment opportunities for the kids but a place for the parents to socialize and interact with each other. Each week we welcome children Kindergarten and Pre-school age at 10 am then first grade and up at 11 am.
August 6: Suncatchers
Suncatchers help children to gain fine motor skills, learn about color and light science, and foster creative self-expression.
August 13: LEGOs
LEGOs are not just building blocks and have many advantages:

August 20: Kindness Rocks
Kindness Rocks are hand-painted stones with uplifting messages left around the community for people to find. By painting a stone, children will build empathy, community engagement, and fine-motor skills.
August 27: X-Rays
Children will learn about anatomy by studying mock X-Ray images. They will also learn the science behind how X-Rays work.
September 3: Labor Day Craft
By making a craft for Labor Day, children will build fine motor skills, learn about community helpers, and practice empathy.
September 10: Crafts for Grandparents
Did you know National Grandparents’ Day is Sunday, September 13, 2026? By making a craft for their grandparents, children will learn to show love and gratitude for their family members. It will also improve their fine motor skills and bolster their creativity.
September 17: Autumn Crafts
Children will learn about nature and the seasons as they create their autumn crafts. They will also gain fine-motor skills and coordination while increasing their creativity.
September 24: Rubberband Helicopters
To create a rubberband helicopter, children will learn about STEM topics, such as energy conversion and Newton’s laws of motion. Next, they will use problem solving to apply these learned topics and craft a working rubberband helicopter.
October 1: Make Your Own Bouncy Balls
By making their own bouncy balls, children will learn about chemical reactions and see their impact as elastic properties are created.
October 8: Paint 3D Wooden Objects
By painting three-dimensional wooden objects, children will gain spatial awareness and improve their creativity.
October 15: Air-Dry Clay
Air dry clay is not only fun but also offers the following educational benefits for kids:
Builds fine motor skills
Sparks creativity & imagination
Encourages focus & mindfulness
Supports cognitive development
Strengthens emotional expression
October 22: Paint by Numbers
Through a creative outlet, children will gain sequential logic and visual literacy skills while also increasing dexterity.
October 29: Halloween Crafts
Halloween crafts provide a fun and engaging way for children to express their creativity while also gaining educational benefits such as:
Fine motor skills
Storytelling
Math concepts
Vocabulary and spelling skills
November 5: Veterans Day Craft
Veterans Day Crafts will foster gratitude and patriotism in children. They will also encourage self-expression and creativity.
November 12: Microscopes
The benefits for children completed a microscope activity include:

November 19: Thanksgiving Crafts
Through Thanksgiving crafts, children will learn to practice gratitude and gain a historical understanding of the holiday.
