1938 – After two years of discussion and planning, the Key West City Council passed an ordinance providing for zoning within city limits.

1898 - A Naval Court of Inquiry was organized to investigate the sinking of the USS Maine, and it would meet in the Key West Custom House.

1964 – The Navy awarded a $1,967,209 contract to Bauer Dredging Company to deepen Key West’s main ship’s channel to 34 feet.

1859 – Reports of a false light shown by wreckers near Alligator Reef were incorrect. It was the watch fire on Tea Table Key.

1999 – Key West City Clerk Josephine Parker died unexpectedly after collapsing at the dais just before the start of a commission meeting.

1924 – So many tourists were traveling between Key West and Havana that the steamship Governor Cobb had to make an extra trip.

1954 – After completing structural surveys, the Florida Road Department greenlighted 2,000 feet of fishing catwalks on bridges.

1960 – Students at Key West High School were dismissed for the day after a phone caller warned a bomb was set go off there at 2 p.m.

1975 – Key West-based air Sunshine announced that despite rising fuel costs, they would not raise fares.

1917 – The first long-distance telephone connection from Key West was made to Miami at 1:47 p.m.

2000 – A Navy clinic and Veterans Administration clinic both opened in a new building on the old Naval hospital grounds in Key West.

1954 – Key West diver Ed Ciesinski left for Nassau to work with the underwater camera crew on “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
