The Monroe County Library in Islamorada is named for Helen Wadley, a woman of inexhaustable energy who was a tireless community volunteer. A true “Friend of the Library” the library was dedicated to her and in 1986 it officially became the Helen Wadley Library.

Horan will discuss how salvage law has changed in the last 35 years and relate the history of the salvage litigation in which he successfully defended the Mel Fisher Treasure Salvors against the state of Florida and others over the treasure recovered from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha.  He will also talk about other salvage cases such as that of Titanic, El Cazador and Odyssey Marine v. Kingdom of Spain.

Horan currently represents 15 South American families against the Kingdom of Spain’s claim to half a million gold and silver coins recovered by Odyssey Marine Explorations, as well as the salvors of emeralds, amethysts and crystals recovered north of Key West.

This year, One Island One Book is offering a special opportunity — a guided tour of Flagler’s Speedway to Sunshine, the special Over-Sea Railroad Centennial exhibit at the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House.

The Custom House exhibit features a re-created Florida East Coast railcar, a replica of a section of the Seven Mile Bridge, vintage footage of the journey from the Middle Keys to Key West and a film recounting Flagler’s story and the arrival of the first train. Artifacts include a railroad worker’s tool chest, conductor’s uniform and other rare items from the collection of Seth Bramson, America’s foremost collector of Florida East Coast Railway memorabilia.

In addition, the Art & Historical Society has generously offered free admission during One Island One Book — Feb. 15 to March 15 – to anyone with a Monroe County Library card.

One Island One Book 2012 is reading Last Train to Paradise by Les Standiford, in recognition of the Centennial of the completion of the Over-Sea Railroad. Copies of the book, including audiobook, ebook and eaudio formats, are available from the Library.
