Pottery Class for Kids/Teens

Ms. Patricia, who is both an artist and the youth services coordinator at Key West Public Library, will be teaching this one-day pottery class for 10- to 18-year-olds at Marathon Branch on February 24. She will guide the kids through basics such wheel throwing and pinch pots, then give them the freedom to let creativity flow. Materials will be provided.

Short Story Writing Workshop

Published author and Key West Public Library staff member Edgardo Alvarado will be leading a weekly short story workshop at Marathon Branch starting Tuesday, February 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. Alvarado wrote the historical novel “The Funerals of Key West,” which was awarded a literary art grant from the Anne McKee Fund in 2014. Using a PowerPoint presentation, he will guide participants through the ins and outs of creating a short story, from inspiration to putting pen to paper. Creating Realities Art Workshop

“Creating Realities Art Workshop” will start Monday, January 22, at 10 a.m. and continue weekly each Monday after that. The gathering will be led by local artist Silvia Fontaine, and materials will be provided by the library.
The artist sees the gathering as less of a class than a workshop where all participants will bring their experience and create a project together or individually. Fontaine was an art teacher in Cuba for nine years and has a bachelor’s degree in art history.

Tax Preparation Assistance

Stressed about filing your taxes? Take heart. Volunteers from the United Way of the Florida Keys will be coming to Marathon Branch every Thursday afternoon from 1:30 to 5 p.m. starting February 1 to help you prepare and file your taxes for free. If you earned less than $54,000 in 2017, you can let their certified volunteer tax preparers see if you are eligible for earned income credit, child tax credit, education credits, or dependent care credit. Acoustic Jam Meetup

Acoustic musicians and vocalists of all skill levels are invited to meet for a new twice-monthly jam at Marathon Public Library on the first and third Mondays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. This group will be led by two local amateur guitar players who enjoy meeting other musicians and singers to play new and old songs and harmonize in a non-judgmental setting. Story Time With Ms. Melody

Ms. Melody’s Story Time gathering on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. is meant for toddlers, while the session on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. is geared toward preschoolers. She reads aloud and does a craft or a sing-along to encourage the fun of books for your little one. You can feel free to ask Ms. Melody for literacy tips to get your child in a reading routine. Cinematheque: “The Dancing Life”

The February 2018 theme for Cinematheque, Marathon Public Library’s free weekly film series, is “The Dancing Life.” All movies this month are romanticized visions of mankind’s dance with life. First up, on Wednesday, February 7, at 6 p.m., is “Pleasantville,” released in 1998. The remaining schedule is as follows: Wednesday, February 14, at 6 p.m., “The Purple Rose of Cairo”; Wednesday, February 21, at 6 p.m., “O Brother Where Art Thou?”; and Wednesday, February 28, at 6 p.m., “The Truman Show.” We’ll be showing all films on the large screen …
