This year, One Island One Book is offering a special opportunity — a guided tour of Flagler’s Speedway to Sunshine, the special Over-Sea Railroad Centennial exhibit at the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House.

For the Key West Library’s third One Island One Book program, we’re reading Last Train to Paradise by Les Standiford — the perfect book for 2012, the Centennial of the Over-Sea Railroad.
Standiford will speak at the library on Feb. 27 — but we’re hoping our patrons and other community members will be already taking part well ahead of that in our first online readalong. That will start Jan. 22 — the actual centennial day of Henry Flagler riding the first train into Key West.

One Island One Book combines with the Library’s popular Cafe con Libros (Books with Coffee) series to present the Library’s own Historian Tom Hambright, in a talk about the Over-Sea Railroad.
Hambright has been historian with the Monroe County Libraries for more than 25 years and is the pre-eminent authority on local history.
He oversees a vast collection of documents and photographs and recently oversaw the scanning and identifying of more than 700 images of the railroad on the library’s popular online photo archive.
