Insatiable by Meg Cabot

With the whole world going crazy about vampires, it’s no surprise to see bestselling author — and Key West resident! — Meg Cabot join in. Though Cabot is best known for her books for younger readers, like the Princess Diaries and Ally Finkle series, “Insatiable” is a novel intended for adults.

Cabot is clearly having fun with both the history of vampire lit and its current trendiness. Her heroine, Meena Harper, is a clear reference to the heroine of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and her primary love interest, Lucien Antonescu, is a Romanian of royal vampire descent. But Meena’s a modern New Yorker who writes dialogue for a soap opera — and her bosses have decided they have to jump on the hot trend and order up a vampire storyline.

Oh yeah — and Meena has some supernatural abilities of her own (shades of Sookie Stackhouse?) that make her more than usually attractive to vampires of all stripes.

This was a fun read, and I’d recommend it to those looking for a light, comedic take on vampires and romance — if you like Jennifer Crusie, chances are you’ll like this, too. And it would be a great read in advance of the October 14 return of the Book Bites reading group, which will focus, appropriately enough, on vampire lit from Bram Stoker to Justin Cronin.
